My First Trip to Stand on a Corner in Winslow, Arizona

๐ŸŽถ Well, I’m standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona
And such a fine sight to see ๐ŸŽถ

There are so many reasons why people pick a particular place to visit when they are traveling. I wanted my three-week road trip from New York to Wrestlemania 39 in Hollywood, California, to be filled with beautiful things I’ve never seen before and fun, goofy things to do. You know, those kitschy things that a road trip across America is known for. That included the Small Town with Big Things, Casey, Illinois, and all the things to see on Route 66, such as the Blue Whale of Catoosa. It also meant driving to a corner in Winslow, Arizona just for a photo op and to sing a song made famous by The Eagles.

Photo Op Fun!

Winslow, Arizona was on the way to see my son in Phoenix, so it fit into the itinerary. However, I only had a short time to stay, so our goal was to get the photos and visit a store or two (I support local businesses wherever I go).

Did you know that when the song was written, it wasn’t written about any area in particular? But once fans of the song started looking for the mentioned corner, the town realized they had to create something for them to see. So they created “Standing on the Corner Parkโ€ at the intersection of Route 66 and North Kinsley Avenue. It was made official in 1999 and includes statues of the band for you to take photos with, a flatbed, and a wall of ‘Take it Easy’ wings. Let’s not forget the extra large guitars!

More to Do

Did you know that there is also an annual “Standin’ on the Corner” festival for fans? This is a busy corner as it is, but every September it gets even busier as many fans come by the area to meet and enjoy good food and fun.

You should know that even though the corner of Winslow is probably the town’s biggest attraction, it’s not the only thing to do. If you have time, visit the Old Trails Museum, which shows you the train history of this town — good news, it’s free! There’s also the Hubbell Trading Post. By the way, we decided to visit the Sipp Shoppe right at the corner. The ice cream is delicious but a little pricey. Here is an article that lists other things to do.

Virgin Traveler Tip

Remember, if you’re a Virgin Traveler — traveling for the first time — pick fun things that YOU want to do. Don’t choose things just because other people want to do them, even the kitschy stuff. Only do it if it’s something you really want to do; otherwise, it’s not your trip. I wanted to do all these goofy things and get fun photo ops in addition to seeing some of the most beautiful scenery along the way. My trip was filled with MY idea of fun. If your idea of fun is seeing every historic home or sitting on every beach or trying every brewery, do it! Start with one and go from there.

I’m sorry if this song is stuck in your head now. LOL
